Room 6 Newsletter Term 2 Week 8
This week we had a great cultural themed mufti day. It was great to see both students and teachers wearing traditional dress throughout the school. Thanks to the parents who helped their children get themselves organised for this. We know it is not as easy as it seems sometimes.
The funds raised from this go to the school’s World Vision child sponsorship.
Communities Concept Study
We are continuing to focus on our Community concept with students in Room Six, beginning to consider a country they would like to spend some time researching. They will be finding out about a festival that is celebrated, food, symbols of that country, its flag and its geographical location. Our concept is called a PASSPORT TO THE WORLD. Each student in room 6 now has a passport and as we learn about each continent or country they will get a stamp in their passport. As a class we are going to be learning about the culture of the Mexican people. (Towards the end of the term each student will get to choose a culture/country of their choice to research about.) While we are learning about Mexico we will be learning about one of their biggest celebrations of the year 'Cinco De Mayo', which is celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November. It is a celebration of remembering those who have passed away and celebrating their lives. It is a time where families and friends come together for a fiesta. It is a happy time and it is not connected to Halloween or anything 'scary'. In the next few weeks as we learn more about it, speak with your children about this culture and celebration and see what they can teach you. If you come into our class in the next few weeks you will see a lot of colour for our fiesta!!
Spelling
For most children (once they can spell the basic words - Fast Words) research has shown that learning a list of weekly words is not retained. Focussing on a spelling sound, blend, chunk or pattern gives children the understanding of how words are spelt and can be applied when writing.
Mathletics Homework
It is great to hear how excited the children are about how many points they are earning on Mathletics each night. We also run a fortnightly competition within the school for the class with the most points overall.
Please ask your child if they know their Mathletics login details so that they can access it at home. If not please let me know.
Reading Homework
Children can read from a book on Sunshine Online or Tumblebooks. They should all know how to access this as we use it often at school. They students can also bring home a number of books from the school library. There is an expectation that at least one of these remains at school for SSR time. They are more than welcome to take the rest home to read as part of their homework.
Fitness
Each day the Middle and Senior school spend ten minutes after roll with some warm up fitness activities.
If your child is unable to run, but still able to attend school, can you please provide a note so that they may be excused.
Uniforms
As we approach the mid part of the year it is timely to discuss the school uniform. Details pertaining to the uniform expectations can be found here:
The upcoming holidays present the opportunity to give the uniform a once over to ensure not only that it is the correct uniform, but it is also in good condition and of an appropriate size for your growing child. Please check that the names on all items are still clearly marked.
